Every unit manufactured and supplied by Bobaas Donkies comes standard with a SABS-approved safety valve, with compression outlet (400 kPa pressure rating). This red-indicator valve acts as a dual-purpose safety valve – to relief overheated water, and to relieve excess water pressure.

Combo Valve

We are very excited to offer an upgraded safety valve option for our fire-heated water heaters, enhancing safety, convenience, and ease of use for our clients. (Not recommended for use with pressure pumps)

Key Features of the New Safety Valve (Price at R600):

  • 3-Bar Safety Release Valve: Automatically releases pressure when it exceeds 3 bars to prevent overheating or damage.
  • Integrated Pressure and Temperature Gauges: Conveniently monitor system performance, ensuring optimal operation and safety.
  • Plug-and-Play Design: For existing users, the new valve and gauges are easy to install – just remove the old valve, and replace with the new combo-valve.
  • Pressure Tested for Reliability: Our wood-fired water heaters are pressure-tested to withstand up to 5 bars, ensuring long-term durability.
  • Compatibility with Municipal Water Supply: Designed for pumped water systems with average municipal pressures of 2.5 to 3 bar.

When pressure reaches 3 bars, the safety valve vents to release excess pressure. We strongly recommend installing a breathing/discharge pipe directed towards the ground or a waterway for proper operation, which can be done by a professional plumber.

 STANDARD OPTION

For those seeking a simpler solution, we continue to offer our standard safety valve, which includes:

  • 4-Bar Pressure Valve: Provides safety at higher pressure thresholds but lacks the advanced monitoring features.
  • No Integrated Gauges: Monitoring requires separate tools.

Why Upgrade?

The new Combo-valve not only provides enhanced peace of mind with built-in gauges for easy monitoring but is also designed for hassle-free installation. Current users can quickly upgrade their system with our plug-and-play design. Choose the safety solution that best suits your needs and ensure your water heating system operates at its best!

Spark Arrestor - Do I need one?

This is one item we actually do recommend! The spark arrestor is designed to prevent hot embers and sparks from escaping through the chimney during operation. As smoke rises through the chimney, it passes through a stainless steel mesh screen inside the arrestor, which traps and cools any burning particles before they can exit. This significantly reduces the risk of accidental fires, especially in dry or windy conditions.

Our spark arrestor is manufactured from a round mild steel tube, fitted with a durable stainless steel mesh, and finished with a protective canopy on top to help shield against rain while allowing proper airflow. It is a simple yet highly effective safety feature for responsible wood-fired heating, and it is made to fit perfectly over the existing chimney.

DO I NEED A SACRIFICIAL ANODE?DO I NEED A SACRIFICIAL ANODE?

Where poor quality is a concern to clients, for example, where there is a lot of impurities/chemicals in the water, or in instances where the household hot water usually turns a brown colour when the tap is opened, we would typically recommend an anode.

At an additional cost, we can fit any unit with a sacrificial anode rod, but we need to state that there is no guarantee, nor any specific assurance that the anode provided will resolve problems as a result of poor water quality.

The anode is said to be "self-sacrificing" because it serves as a corrosion magnet to keep the geyser tank from rusting, safeguarding the exposed metal parts of the geyser.

Because the rod has a larger current potential than other metals in the water heater, the anode is typically constructed of magnesium or aluminum wound around a steel core wire. This ensures that the galvanic current travels from the rod to other exposed metals, preventing their corrosion.

Galvanizing & Rust

We understand how important the longevity of your wood-fired water heater is, and we want to reassure you that every unit by BOBAAS DONKIES is manufactured with care and quality control. As per our warranty policy, we offer a 12-month warranty on workmanship only. This covers defects arising from the way the heater was built, but does not extend to factors beyond our control - such as:

  • The type or quality of water used (e.g. hard, corrosive, contaminated, untreated water, & water with a high pH-balance etc),
  • The materials (mild steel) used during fabrication, which can vary depending on supplier availability,
  • The galvanizing, which may be affected over time by environmental conditions and water chemistry – again, this is beyond our control.

While galvanized mild steel is corrosion-resistant, it is not corrosion-proof - especially in aggressive water environments or when exposed to chemicals, air and moisture cycles. As a result, we can give no guarantee whatsoever regarding the durability, or lifespan of our galvanized steel units, or any guarantees with regard to corrosion itself. Water that contains manganese and/or iron, and the heating process in steel itself, may over time cause rust.
